01 / The essentials

What does Webflow do?

Webflow is a visual website platform with hosting and content management options. It gives designers control over responsive layouts while keeping the work in a visual environment. The free Starter offering lets you explore before choosing a paid site plan.

Is it right for you?

A good fit when…

Consider it for a portfolio, marketing website or content-led business site where presentation matters. You will get more from it if you are willing to learn layout, spacing and responsive design concepts.

Look elsewhere when…

Someone expecting complex application behaviour to happen automatically, or a beginner who mainly wants a pre-connected sales funnel and email system with minimal design decisions.

Features that matter

  • Visual site building: shape layouts across screen sizes.
  • Content management: select a plan with the CMS capacity your content needs.
  • Hosted publishing: paid site options support custom domains and expanded capacity.

Feature availability varies by plan. Check the official plan comparison.

The honest trade-offs

Why consider it

  • Strong control over a site's visual structure.
  • Useful for repeated content such as articles or project pages.
  • Can bring design and publishing into a connected workflow.

What to watch

  • Visual design still involves a learning curve.
  • Site and collaboration requirements can lead to different plan costs.
  • A complex app may need additional development and services.
Keep this in mind

Design control can create design debt. Keep reusable styles consistent and avoid animation that makes the site harder to read or navigate.

Understand the whole bill

Free Starter available

Separate the needs of a published site from the team's Workspace requirements. Starter is free; paid site tiers differ in CMS and capacity. Check the current plan names, custom-domain support, bandwidth, localisation and ecommerce needs. Do not assume one upgrade includes every workspace or add-on feature.

Check the currency, tax, billing term and renewal amount at checkout. A monthly equivalent billed annually is not a month-to-month commitment. Start small enough to test the fit before committing to a longer term.

One manageable first project

Your first steps

  1. Sketch your pages and decide what visitors must understand on the homepage.
  2. Start with a small design and consistent type and spacing styles. Learn the layout model before adding effects.
  3. If using a CMS, create a few real sample records and check short and long titles.
  4. Test phone layouts, keyboard navigation, forms and page descriptions before connecting a domain.

How to make the choice

Choose Webflow for a designed website. Compare Replit for a custom app, or Systeme.io when funnel and email setup matter more than fine design control.

Write down the one task you need to complete this month. Trial that task from start to finish, including the awkward cases, before paying for features you might need later.
